Tango
The Tango, in its international competition form, is one of the five standard dances included in official circuits. It stands out for its dramatic intensity, sharp lines, and dynamic variations in movement. This dance is characterized by strong, decisive steps, quick actions, and constant visual and physical connection between partners. The hold is closed yet flexible, and the movement develops progressively along the floor, with frequent changes of direction.
TANGO IS NOT DANCED WITH THE FEET,BUT WITH THE SOUL AND THE GAZE.
HISTORY
Competition Tango traces its origins back to the early 1900s, when this dance — born in the suburbs of Buenos Aires as the Argentine Tango — was stylized and codified in Europe, particularly in England. Its “ballroom” version was adapted to the context of competitions, with more formal posture and a more contained, yet equally expressive, body language. From the 1920s onward, Tango became an integral part of the standard dance competition programs.
CURIOSITIES
Unlike the other standard dances, Tango does not feature the typical “swing” in movement; its steps are more grounded, with a pronounced use of the floor. Moreover, its music has a distinct binary rhythm (2/4), which gives the dance a sense of urgency and passion. It is the only one of the five standard dances that begins with a forward step, rather than the traditional “preparatory step.”
